Phys Ed Classes Combine Fitness & Fun

Wednesdays and Thursdays are two days set aside for physical education at OMPH School. Many students look forward to these days and the activity scheduled for their class. Physical education classes begin each week with a prayer, warm-ups and an explanation or review of rules for the scheduled activity. Students are constantly reminded to demonstrate good sportsmanship and encourage each other.

OMPH School students in grades Kindergarten through 8th Grade have gym class once per week, utilizing the school’s outdoor spaces as weather permits. Grades four through eight cover units on football, basketball, soccer, and wiffle ball. They begin each unit by playing games and relays that incorporate the skills and knowledge of each sport, leading up to playing full, competitive games. Non-sport games, such as Gaga Ball, Scooter relays, and Long Ball are also added to the mix in between units.

Our Kindergarten through 3rd Grade classes participate in scaled-down versions of what the older children are learning, mixed in with age-appropriate tag and running games. Some favorites among our younger students are Zoo Keeper and Sharks and Minnows! Team sports encourage working together, and teach students that they are a part of something bigger than themselves.

Students work on lifting up their classmates when they lose and celebrating the winning team, even if it’s not their team that comes out on top. At the end of the day, the goal of gym classes at OMPH School is to have the entire class in motion and participating, in a safe and respectful environment, while demonstrating good sportsmanship!
