Checking in with Seventh Grade

“The Seventh Grade class at OMPH School has students with names of Finley and Gill, appropriate for a classroom with two aquariums,” joked Seventh Grade homeroom teacher, Mrs. Neafach. With the support of our principal, Mrs. Snyder, and her husband, OMPH is fortunate to again have the Susquehanna Eel program and Pennsylvania Trout in the Classroom program. Students learn about the cycle of our native eel and raise rainbow trout from eggs to release in the Little Cocalico Creek in April. They are responsible for feeding the fish and testing the water chemistry.

Chemistry has been a big focus for Seventh Grade in science this year. Students explored the structure of atoms, learned about chemical reactions, and are currently investigating acids and bases — trying to find the perfect balance (because good chemistry is all about neutralizing problems)! All seventh graders also participated in the OMPH School Science Fair and will compete at the North Museum Science Fair.

In math, seventh graders have been sharpening their Pre-Algebra skills and building strong problem-solving strategies to support future learning. Students began the year studying the Native Americans and colonies, and will continue reviewing U.S. History through the Civil War. In Religion class, they are learning to become better Catholics and preparing for Confirmation next year.

Language Arts gives students the opportunities to improve their grammar and vocabulary skills through traditional units, diagramming sentences and direct vocabulary instruction. This year, students received a new literature and writing program. The texts are consumable and allow students to annotate, with newer non-fiction selections. The program provides an online component with a writing coach. The online writing component helps students organize their writing with a prewriting example, an outline to fill-in, and feedback of their draft.

Reading units included a focus on nonfiction and science fiction space literature. Students worked on alien creations (pictured in this article) in response to Ray Bradbury’s Martian stories. While seventh graders already participated in their field trip in the fall to Middle Creek, they will continue to explore through their texts and some additional short trips.
