Mrs. Hoffmann’s First Grade Blue class is off to a great start! Her students have been completing lessons and activities centered around the story in their new reading series, The Blackout. The story is about a boy whose family checks on their neighbors to make sure they are doing ok after the power goes out during a bad storm.
After reading the story, Mrs. Hoffmann and her students talked about how Jesus comforts them during their time of need and when they are scared. “We also discussed how Jesus teaches us to love our neighbor as ourselves,” explained Mrs. Hoffmann. In Science, First Grade Blue students worked in groups and conducted a rain cloud experiment!
They used a pipette to drop blue dye in shaving cream, which was on top of a beaker filled with water. The shaving cream represented a “cloud.” When the “rain cloud” filled up, the blue dye came “raining” down. During this experiment, the students observed gravity pulling the blue-dye “water droplets” down from the shaving cream “clouds,” just like when it rains or storms. “We discussed the water cycle and the terms evaporation, condensation, and precipitation. The students really enjoyed this fun culminating activity that connected Literature and Science,” shared Mrs. Hoffmann!
