“Welcome to our 4th grade classroom,” exclaimed teacher, Mrs. Dodson! This year, her class moved to their brand new classroom in the modular next to the elementary school. They love learning in their new space. Some of the concepts they have been working on this year in Religion are how to worship God and understand the Ten Commandments. In addition, they also researched a saint, wrote a report about their life and dressed up to share their findings with the school community at Mass. In Language Arts, the 4th grade students are exploring animal adaptations through literature, informational text and even poetry. “Writing travel articles about our favorite places around the world is our next informational project,” shared Mrs. Dodson. The students are learning all the different methods of solving double digit multiplication and long division problems in Math, practicing their math facts on their Chromebooks. In Social Studies, they have studied the landforms of Pennsylvania and have learned new things about their state symbols, history, cities and regions. Studying forms of energy in Science has given the students a chance to conduct experiments with sound waves, electrical circuits and chemical reactions. They made their own amusement ride experiment with rubber bands to learn about potential and kinetic energy. The class has enjoyed learning the many different vocabulary words through playing BINGO daily to understand the lessons (especially when the winners get a treat!) Fourth grade really is the place to be at OMPH!
Miss Rothenberger’s 5th grade class has been doing many fun activities so far this year, especially when discussing some of the Ancient civilizations! The students learned how to write in Cuneiform from Ancient Mesopotamia. Currently in social studies, they are discussing Ancient Egypt and have dived into the Ancient Egyptians lives, their beliefs, famous pharaohs/rulers, and especially their mummification process. The 5th graders conducted an experiment where they buried a hotdog in baking soda and another without baking soda demonstrating how preservation worked and what happened if it wasn’t preserved. The ancient Egyptians preserved the pharaoh’s bodies so their souls could return to them from the afterlife. After two weeks the students checked on the hotdogs and saw how the baking soda preserved the hotdog and how the one without turned moldy. “The 5th grade will continue to participate in more fun activities as the year goes on, including going on a field trip to JA Biztown in April,” shared Miss Rothenberger. At Biztown, the students will join the OMPH 6th grade class to gain experience of how to run and work in a business, how to save and spend their money, manage finances, and vote for a mayor. They will also get to dress up for the specific job they will have! The 5th grade students are looking forward to what the rest of the year will bring!
