Catching Up with 2nd & 3rd Grades

ree

Second grade is a special year for the students. They each embark on a spiritual journey with Jesus. The children prepare to meet Jesus in the sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist. This is a wonderful time of growth in knowledge and participation in their faith. Students learn about the history of these sacraments and their importance in their day-to-day lives. “In preparation for the sacrament of Reconciliation we learn that Jesus’ command to love continues throughout our lifetime! It will be series of successes and failures.

One of the great joys of life is that when we fail to love, we can always trust in God’s mercy and forgiveness,” shared Mrs. Eberly, OMPH School’s Second Grade teacher. As the students begin their studies for the sacrament of Holy Eucharist, they gain a deeper understanding of exactly what takes place during Mass, and what each part means.

The Second Grade class has a special spiritual bond with their Eighth Grade prayer pals. They pray for and encourage each other as both classes prepare to receive special sacraments. Each month the Second Graders meet with their prayer pals, and the older students assist the younger students in seasonal and spiritual activities.

During the month of November, the Third Grade class worked on disguising turkeys, collecting canned goods for the OMPH community pantry, and celebrating the G.O.A.T. during the ExtraGive. The students also worked along with their Seventh Grade Prayer Pals on making patch squares for art that will be part of a school service project. “As we come to the month of December, the Third Grade will be working on creating their own Shoebox Nativity Diorama, making advent wreaths and making their own Jesse trees,” explained Mrs. Touloumis, Third Grade teacher.

In January during Catholic Schools Week, the Third Grade students will express their Catholic faith as good stewards of creation by taking care of the Earth. Students will be using their imaginations to create a science project, reusing materials they have at home to make a brand new recycled craft! This is a fun way for the students to not only learn about the benefits of recycling, but to also understand the importance of caring for God’s creations.

The students will continue to work toward building our community of faith by completing random acts of kindness. As they move along in their Math curriculum, the children continue on their journey of multiplication. “They will use different hands-on activities to learn their multiplication facts,” shared Mrs. Touloumis. These activities include creating multiplication arrays, having class multiplication bees, and working with each other to practice their facts. According to Mrs. Touloumis, “making it fun will make it stick!”
