Catching Up with First Grade Gold

ree

The students in Mrs. Schulze’s First Grade Gold class have been engaged in a season of rich learning experiences! This fall, their classroom has been alive with activities that allow children to explore the world around them while also discovering more about the way God has created each of us.

In mathematics, students have been using apples as a hands-on tool to practice important skills such as counting, addition, and graphing. Through these activities, the class not only strengthened their understanding of numbers and patterns but also experienced the joy of learning in a way connected to the season. The fall colors and variety of apples provided a natural, not to mention delicious, way to explore addition number sentences and comparison!

In the area of language arts and social studies, neighborhoods have been thoroughly investigated! From types of homes, streets and corners to traffic signals and crossing guards, the students have discussed it all! The class worked with paper pumpkins to design and build “pumpkin houses” to add to their bulletin board neighborhood. “Each pumpkin house was a unique creation, a reflection of each child’s individual personality and ideas. Just as no two pumpkins are alike, so too each “house” highlighted the distinct ways in which children express themselves,” shared Mrs. Schulze.

A special highlight of First Grade Gold’s fall studies was reading the story The Smart Cookie. This engaging tale opened the door to important conversations about how God has made every person in His image (Genesis 1:27). The story reminded students that, like the smart cookie, we each have unique gifts and abilities. Some students may be excellent in reading, others in math, art, or athletics, but all are equally valuable in God’s eyes!

As a class, they discussed the importance of celebrating one another’s strengths, encouraging one another in challenges, and remembering that God delights in the way He has made each one of them. This fall season in First Grade Gold continues to be one of joyful learning, creative expression, and spiritual growth. As students continue their journey, they are not only building a strong foundation in academics but also learning to see themselves and others as precious creations of God, uniquely gifted for His purpose.
